Steven Calakos attended Rowan University and earned his Bachelor of Arts degrees in Elementary Education and Theatre. He is an award-winning teacher and theatre director having taught in Vineland Public Schools in New Jersey for over eleven years. He served as director of theatre programs at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and established professional partnerships with community organizations and regional theaters to offer resources for teachers and students. Steven recognized the need for affordable theatre education programs and co-founded his own theatre production company in 2014 to offer programs for socioeconomically disadvantaged families.
Steven previously served as Director of Education at Gulfshore Playhouse where his primary mission was to make theatre education more accessible for students of all ages. He oversaw and executed comprehensive, interdisciplinary arts education programs, led community outreach and engagement initiatives, developed and facilitated professional development workshops centered on drama-based pedagogy and served as a theatre arts education consultant for Collier County Public Schools.
Steven now serves as the Managing Director at Mainstage Center for the Arts in Blackwood, New Jersey, where he helps lead the organization's artistic, educational, and community programming initiatives.
Steven is also a professional actor, singer, and model with national credits, including being a member of Actors Equity Association, producing and performing in three solo concerts, and appearing in several television ads and feature films. Steven is a recipient of the 2022 and 2023 Tony Award Honorable Mention for Excellence in Theatre Education, as well as, Greek America Foundation Forty Under 40 Award and is a Gulfshore Business 40 Under 40 Honoree.
